Making every contact count (MECC)

What is MECC?

Making Every Contact Count (or 'MECC') just means having a simple conversation that softly encourages healthy behaviour changes. These conversations are usually very short, and can be with anyone - clients, friends, family, or colleagues. It can be applied to a range of different topics such as:

  • Smoking
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Diet
  • Physical Activity
  • Mental Wellbeing
  • Vaccination
  • Sexual Health
  • Cost of Living
  • And many more!

 Training

In West Sussex we hold training in how to have a 'MECC' healthy conversation. It is available to anyone who works with the public in West Sussex.

The training offer is shown visually in the pathway graphic at the bottom on the page, and you can sign up to training via the links below:

  1. Core MECC E-Learning and Skills Session Workshop
  2. MECC Train the Trainer
  3. MECC Vaccination
  4. MECC Alcohol Harm Reduction

You will need to sign up to the West Sussex Learning and Development Gateway to access all of the training. This is free and if you are not employed by West Sussex County Council, please just select 'external user' and follow the instructions to create an account. If you have any issues, please contact learninganddevelopment@westsussex.gov.uk

The introduction to MECC E-Learning is a mandatory first step (note this may not be available until late October 2025 due to technical issues), but then you can choose which topics you want to cover and can also sign up to a practical workshop if you'd like. We also have a 'train the trainer' option for people who would like to learn how to deliver training to their organisation or team.
